Ageing or degeneration of the spine is often referred to as spondylosis or spondyloarthrosis. Most degenerative spine disorders respond amicably to proper non-operative care including medication, exercises and alteration in activities of daily living.
However, if they are accompanied by abnormal movement (instability) in between the vertebrae as in lysis or lysthesis, surgery may be needed.

Occasionally, a superimposition of a systemic disease like rheumatoid arthritis may cause pressure on the spinal cord resulting in weakness of the lower or upper limbs. To prevent paralysis a decompressive surgery may be needed.
